Both as indie as each other!

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like Hot Chip or Scritti Politti to win, but I suspect it will go to Sway... not necessarily a bad thing, but if anyone deserves recognition of a career in music, it should be Green Gartside and his Polittis.

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Is the Scritti album that good? I haven't got round to getting it yet but for some reason think i'm going to be disappointed, especially after I adored his last one.

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it, even though it sounds nothing whatsoever like the previous album. Gone are the hip-hop beats, and this is a much more stripped down album... it's basically vocals and a bit of backing music... no beats. It's very unusual-sounding, but it's grown on me.

The shortlist for the second annual Lex 20p Indie Prize will be revealed soon I am sure.

OOH we can do it at trig brother!

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
The schedule for TB is quite full enough as it is!

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
We can do it AFTER Trig Brother!

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
GOOD THINKING DR DC.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
as i have just pointed out on the Other Place, there is the same number of black people on each list, ie 1.

i haven't actually heard any of the albums nominated! though i kind of half-heartedly want to hear sway, scritti politti and hot chip.

singles - rachel s and sugababes outstrip the competition by a VERY VERY long way.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
how many black people on the selection committee/judging panel etc. is perhaps the real 'problem'.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Lex: both Gorillaz and Sugababes have black members, plus Rachel Stevens is a pork refuser.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
he's not bothered about Jewish representation tho

Dangermouse = presumably a 'mash-up' racially? (ha ha this is dodgy territory)

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
This is a sort of landmark for me - the first year I haven't heard any of the records on the Mercury shortlist. (The Scritti only through laziness).

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've only heard Sway. It's pretty good though and would be a deserved winner.

"Swaaaaay, I don't like you anymore"
"I don't care, I'm just followin' fashion"

Safe.

time to shave, methinks

[identity profile] the-roofdog.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I have heard most of the Mercury list, Hawley was one of my fav records of last year and Scritti is ace. If the Arct*c M*nk*ys win I shall do someone an injury.

Sadly I reckon it's them or Sway.

[identity profile] atommickbrane.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never heard of Hawley! NEITHER have I heard of:

Lou Rhodes (sister of Nick?)
Guillemots
Zoe Rahman??

Will Young to win BEST VIDEO shurely.

Re: time to shave, methinks

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Lou Rhodes is apparently HER out of LAMB
Zoe R = a jazzatrix
Guillemots = ask The Lex

Re: time to shave, methinks

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. I have received the Guillemots album but have not yet dared listen to it. It looks a bit rubbish really.

Re: time to shave, methinks

[identity profile] darkpigeon.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The Guillemots drummer used to be in Suitable Case For Treatment, who did a collaboration with Jon Snow and are superior in every way

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I have heard some of the Scritti album cos I saw them play it at the GIG INNIT.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard the Thom Yorke, and most of the Arctic Monkeys. Which actually beats the Popjustice (just Girls Alouds), except the AM's have negative weight on the Scales of Pop.

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Tom you will like the Sway record, I predict.

ISOBEL CAMPBELL???

[identity profile] atommickbrane.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Gobsmacked!

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it me or is this a particularly indie year?

And wft with the Yorke record? Have they just been holding the nominations announcement until it came out?

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
more likely 'The Eraser' was released as late as it could be but still in time for inevitable nomingation. they did this with SFA's 'rings Around The World' too.

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like it didn't leak onto the Interweb weeks ago though.

[identity profile] jel-bugle.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurrah, I have none of the nominated albums!

Why weren't Dragonforce nominated???

[identity profile] jel-bugle.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! Go to their Myspace page:

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
PJ list is pretty good. "Biology", "Destroy", "I Said Never Again", "Push The Button" all worthy winners. I actually think "Valentine" is the best record on the list!

ALSO, THE MUSE ALBUM IS REALLY GREAT. Except kind of towards the end, and one song in the middle, it's a bit rubbidge, but it's good, yes. I wouldn't mind Sway winning as he is very funny. The Editors album has one good song on it and is indie. I don't know what you're all hearing in that Scritti Politti album, it is wretchedly awful and Mr Gartside should take a long hard look at himself and be embarrassed at the laudation. The Hawley one is clearly bestest. If Thom Yorke wins.

If I liked that last Guillemots single, will I like the album?

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
er, If Thom Yorke wins, I am coming to The Britishes with a big stick to hurt indie kids BADLY. (But will LEX be spared?)
