The History Of Pop Part 53 aka Nobody listens to techno

Guess who's back? Back again? Yes, it's the Now polls (boom boom), having left you all on a cliffhanger for two weeks as a TIE on Now 52 leaves Sugababes and Nelly fighting it out below. Meanwhile it's a first appearance for Eminem and for Busted, Christina Milian singing a song about gravy, the return of the terrible funk pun and a host of other talking points. It may not be a vintage Now, but who cares - we're back! Back!! BACK!!!

[Poll #758602]

TICK-O!

Yes, I think the line between this and James Blunt etc is straight and true. Even Blunt would never stoop as low as WHIMSY, though.

I feel a bit sorry for the bloke, even if he did make a crap smug album when he got all big, so I ticked his box anyway.

I remember him but not this tune. I still reckon it's likely the worst on here. Never could see why anyone liked him.

if one were to have guilty pleasures, BDB's 'Silent Sigh' would most certainly be one of them. even tho it's from the About A Boy soundtrack, it's lovely. weird electromong Zongamin remix of it too so that's OK.

Fischerspooner rmx of 'Come Into My World' is still so good and even better than the original!

dave q's greatest one-liner on ILM was about this Kylie song

In my second year I was once woken up at 2am by my neighbours playing that horrid horrid horrid song which I assume Tom has ticked in jest at top volume.

I blasted them with So Solid Crew and Diamanda Galás in return => they IMMEDIATELY stopped and indeed I did not hear or see them for the rest of the year => LEX WINS!

Because the night belongs to us

This is how I discovered Patti Smith! Who I really like as well as this boshing cover.

BOSH BOSS

[identity profile] the-roofdog.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you not discover THE BOSS at the same time ?

Oh no - I was thinking of a different SEB song. This one is not the best.

I still don't really like 'What I Go To School For'. It misleadingly made me hate Busted for a few months.

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's my favorite. There are probably better later ones, but this one I remember perfektly.

The bottom drops out

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one lousy Now, IMO. I checked several dubious "I think that might be okay's" on this one, when I usually err on the side of pristine pop perfection.

Raven Maize

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
the Raven Maize (a Joey Negro and Jakatta alias iirc - appearing on the same NOW twice!) is a wholesale rip-off of the DJ Falcon 'live' remix of 'La Mouche' by Cassius, a French house classique.

weirdly it also reminds me of 'So Tired Of Waiting For You' by Le Kinks.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting that Ms Dynamite has a) most votes, on about 90% and b) zero 'best' votes.

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's all the lovin' for Supergrass? One of their finest pop moments... perhaps it passed many Poptimists by? Or perhaps the 'GET GRACE OUT' campaign on Big Brother turned many of you against this classic?

Well we jumped all night
On your trampoline
When you kissed the sky
Made your sister scream

You ate our chips
And you drank our Coke
Then you showed me Mars
Through your telescope

Oh Grace
Save your money for the children
Oh Grace
Save your money for the children

one of the Neptunes 'weirder' but still sparse pop productions. really fantastic and sadly overlooked.

APPLETON'S FANTASY is very undervalued here!

it is kinda proto-girls aloud also

Oh my sides (aka my Coldplay story)

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Shortly after "In My Place" was released as a single, I had to telephone a financial institution for some reason and (as per) got put in a queue of callers.

What music immediately started playing down the phone after I was put on hold? "Oooooh, how long must you wait for him?" etc.

I didn't see the funny side.

Anthony, you contrary bug9er ;)

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-06-30 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
come on, you don't *really* like hero do you? it's overwraught bluster of the highest order...
