The Month In POP

Thought I'd take the initiative seeing as it's the end of the month and all. Double bonus month feature!

[Poll #738093]

The Phoenix track is quite good, but f I try to limit myself to "new in April/May" iTunes offers no easy answers to this question. My actual top track is unquestionably the Peel Sessions version of "Come Out 2Nite," which is new to me but probably no one else. Similarly Oceans Apart by the Go-Betweens, who I had never paid attention to until McLennan's died.

My ACTUAL Pop answer...

...is probably Nelly Furtado's 'Promiscuous Girl'

Thanks for reminding me to seek her new stuff out. Random people keep saying how enjoyable it is.

I was torn between the track I cited and the new singles by LL Cool J/J-Lo and Mary J. Blige. Hang on, also, was Prince's Black Sweat April?

[identity profile] zenith.livejournal.com 2006-05-29 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that was March, although of course you could have heard it in April...

'Black Sweat' was ages ago - I heard it in April but was v late. I am torn about it - on the one hand, ace production and stuff! On the other it has no tune - this is not necessarily a bad thing, 'I'm A Slave 4 U' had no tune after all and is Brit's second best single; but Prince can't pull it off because he sounds old and wheezy and slightly emphysematic, and not sexxxy at all. In fact he should have given it to Britney, it would have been totally beneficial to both of them.

LL Cool J and J-Lo is SO good - I love that the drive towards minimalism is infecting hip-hop too. When 'Lose Control' came out I thought that was pretty sparse but this makes that sound like Basement Jaxx.

am tantalised by idea of Britney doing 'Black Sweat' i must confess.

Yes, I know that there is a standard rule of "it would be ace if every song ever was done by Britney" but I think it applies more than most to 'Black Sweat'.

I just got the Ellen Allien & Apparat album yesterday, and that might well end up becoming the best thing I heard in May...

Spank Rock album is totally ace! Real dirty booty bass stuff. I think you will like it. The albums from Spank Rock and Dabrye will be v useful to me when DJing as stuff to cross from hip-hop to house and vice versa.

The remixes of 'Turbo Dreams' are amazing - there's an extended version which blows my mind, and the Pier Bucci mix is incredible too.

I kind of like Spank Rock but the nasal voice really bugs me.

BANG IT BITCH!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone who loves the raving should check out the Carl Craig rmx of 'Revelée' by Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - it's like 11 minutes or something silly like that, the first three minutes are beatless building up, next three still more building up, and then WHRRRM WHRRRM BEEP BEEP! The riff reminds me a little of the 'Silent Shout' arpeggios.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
i finally heard it yesterday - it's great but i can't seem to find a decent mp3 of it anywhere!!!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
I lent my single of it to Matt DC yesterday (and already want it back!) - maybe he will do an upload.

[livejournal.com profile] koganbot, surely not teh Girl Authority?! It's hard to tell whether the small children in the band or the small children that get the CDs bought for them are being worse abused.

I answered the poll by saying Scritti, but that's cos I just heard it for first time and it's awesome. Ellen & Ap or Scott W would be the other contenders for April/May's best.
