The History Of Pop Part 38 aka My baby's got no money, he's got his true belief

The last of 1997, and if you think some of the big hits are being held over until next time...you'd be right. But the nation was in NO MOOD for pop party fun as - sob! bawl! - DI DIED, and weren't we all glad that Sir Richard Ashcroft was there to help us through it. There's no sign of Elton on this Now, by the way, even though he bossed the charts - to sully such a beautiful track by including it on a compilation would of course be unthinkable, so you'll have to save your ticks.

Hanson's "Mmmmbop" won Now 37 at a canter, after tying with the Spice Girls for a long time. The Cardigans ended up in third. And now, over to you lot.

Haha no way, the second and third sections are just jaw-droppingly bereft of goodness!

Judging from the vile SexySongs, I am guessing that this Now was circa The Full Monty. Urrrrrghhhh.

Has there ever been a worse run of three on a Now than The Verve/Oasis/Embrace?!

Connor Reeves - kinda like Ben from Curiosity Killed The Cat doing tepid RnB. Kenny Thomas needn't have worried...

The 911 is OK - 'Party people, it's Friday night...gotta keep on dancin til the morning light' - probably.

[identity profile] mostlyconnect.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha after 5 votes the NO TO ALLs are winning on two disks!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I only ticked the LL Cool J because his new single is amazing, I don't actually remember it.

Thank god for Boyz II Men is all I can say.

Phenomenon

WORST NOW EVAH!!!

[identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Gratified as I am by the love being shown for Gala, I'm surprised that equal reverence is not being devoted to Monsieur le Sash and his most excellent 'Stay'.

why all the love? is it because of shooting stars?

When is the czech track due btw? You asked for Brzil and Ghana, I am confused :(

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
MY PRINCE HAS GOT NO MOTHER, HE'S GOT HIS STRONG BELIEFS.

Ahem.

Gala is the best thing on here, although that All Saints single is terrific. Better than the Spice Girls one (shark-jumping moment right here).

Who is lonelier - CAST or PETER ANDRE?

Discuss.

i ticked lots!

I am frightened of you.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised that Poptimists generally seems to be impervious to the impeccable harmonies of the Backstreet Boys, they were mostly ignored last time too.

Also this is Janet Jackson ft Q-Tip and JONI MITCHELL!

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
the Armand Van Helden mix of this Janet Jackson is quiet boshy - it's on the AMAZING first Essential Mix that Basement Jaxx did.

TINA MOORE

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does nobody remember Tina Moore? This track is fantastic - it effectively triggered both Speed Garage AND 2 Step. I despair agane.

This is actually the worst ever, though at least it's the start of the All Saints Era (only noted as such inside my head).

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)

NOOOoooooooooooo

You haven't been loved, George :(

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
George Michael has been disrespected way too many times in these NOW! polls, but zero votes, until mine, for YHBL really is the last straw! It's the best thing on here by miles, thoroughly beautiful if a bit depressing.

I've never heard it! It sounds great, of course.
