Rrrrrrround Up

Might as well put all this into one huge post!

You have until midnight to vote in the Pop World Cup Group F.

Group G starts on Wednesday - which means that freakytrigger@gmail.com needs MP3s or links thereof, and team talks, from [livejournal.com profile] braisedbywolves, [livejournal.com profile] darkpigeon, [livejournal.com profile] atommickbrane, and [livejournal.com profile] stevem78 - by midnight TOMORROW please!

Science research by [livejournal.com profile] boyofbadgers suggests that goths don't think the Cure are goth but that everyone else does. Here at any rate is the official Cure Canon:

1. In Between Days (25 votes)
2. Boys Don't Cry (23 votes)
3. The Lovecats (22 votes)
4. Close To Me (20 votes)
5. Just Live Heaven (19 votes)
6. A Forest (16 votes)
7. Friday I'm In Love (14 votes)
8=. Lullaby (10 votes)
8=. Pictures Of You (10 votes)
10. Why Can't I Be You (8 votes)

No support at all for High, A Letter To Elise, Mint Car or Taking Off. The old stuff is apparently the best.

Speaking of which, more hagiography of Guilty Pleasures. My top 3 reasons for disliking GP, in chart countdown order:

3. Residual distrust of the phrase "guilty pleasure" reinforcing a tedious hierarchy of music listening etc etc.
2. Going to their tent at Glastonbury and being a bit disappointed with the tunes on offer.
1. Intense soul-gnawing envy.

Meanwhile, you might remember Winner Stays On, designed to find the best track in the world right now, and you might also remember that there hasn't been one for ages. That's because for whatever reason doing it felt like more hassle than doing the other orgafun. Anyway instead what we're going to do is have a TRACK OF THE MONTH poll each month, so here's where you can nominate something for that:

[Poll #680984]

Simple innit!

clearly once we have a new venue we must PICKET guilty pleasures, with big placards and everything.

NO NEED FOR GUILT

WE ♥ POP

etcetc

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
also, speaking of guilty pleasures (HOHO!), high and letter to elise are quite good cure, but not worthy of a top 7 place...

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
it's the hooky-esque bassline that makes an forest though, also jukebox-friendliness.

SPEAKING OF WHICH, in the swimmer on saturday afternoon there was ALL THE CURE on the juker, it was great :)

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GUILT!!

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
NOW THE GUILT IS OFF THE GINGERBREAD!!

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
I will probably buy the two GP CDs some time (cos the music on them = mostly great and mostly not already in my CD collection) if I can find them selling cheaply.

But I hate the titles too, and obviously agree with your reason 3.

As for this:
David Essex is in. The Scorpions are out ("rubbish", reckons Rowley). Scissor Sisters are in. Girls Aloud are out ("too knowing"). S Club 7's Don't Stop Moving is in. ("There is an innocence about that record.")

Wuh? So basically, Rowley's saying he (his club) only plays records he likes? Revolutionary!

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
also WRONG!

it's STILL horrendously rockist, but i can't quite put my finger on why, and that is what annoys me most i think (and reason 3 obv.)

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
i thought the way rowley was distancing himself so readily from irony was interesting...

...is it because it's totally a nostalgia-fest that it annoys me?

i think we need a FIELD TRIP to observe at close quarters.

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Nostalgia? Maybe. I think it's 90% that Rowley's taste is kinda rub.

I agree with the FIELD TRIP idea. Especially if we can do some SCIENCE.

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
science and PICKETING!

[identity profile] sbp.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah but then you're giving them MUNNY and they will use it to PERPETUATE their GUILTY POP.

[identity profile] sbp.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Esp. as rockistism is much more a guilty pleasure than the mainstream pop. I mean, getting down to the Quo or a sneaky lighter wave at the Winds of Chang is much more a guilty ples than dancing to S Club 7.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only that - he vets the choices of other DJs who play there. You may be *this* guilty precisely, and no guiltier...

Re: Gut prejudice confirmed!

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he did when an associate of mine guested, anyway. The Jarvs of this world may get more latitude...

We *will* find a new home for the Poptimismists!

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
i cannot decide if they have really squared away irony into guilt.

I DO NOT TRUST THIS THING

anyone feeling guilty listening to aHa or s-club is an idiot of their own making. anyone who can't enjoy something that is "too knowing" likewise. IT DOES NOT MATTER.

bollocks to it.

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
argh that "too knowing" thing has me really annoyed now.

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-02-27 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, only cos he said it about the girls i bet ;)

oh, i should point out that this was ON THE FRONT COVER (column five) of the graun as well...
