Best Song of 2003: Heat #1

Russian faux-lesbians, Knightrider bhangra and countless remixes by Richard X: welcome to 2003!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do this on five or more of the eight heats and get an extra nomination slot for 2004! (thx to [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus for this suggestion)

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote

[Poll #1477035]

Extra ticks for this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] meserach, [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and myself.

I decided just to tick things that could arguably be the best song of the year, without any votes of moral support for otherwise ludicrous picks.

possibly better if you pretend this was something from Paris Hilton's album (tho I would understand if that actually ruins it for you)

NOW WHO GOT THE IN FLOW KEEPIN IT TIGHT etc.

Guessing a lot of you haven't heard this - it's IMO the best track from the 'Electric Version' album. Exuberant sugar-rush power pop:

The only one of these I care about that I consider unlikely to go through is 03 Bonnie & Clyde":

More or less a cover of "Me and my Girlfriend" by Tupac, but I like it better than the original.

Fiddy - Back Down

I got into this, believe it or not, via the FashionTV channel. Of course, they used a different video. Ahem.

Song is great. The spoken word bit at the end is a bit dubious though.

Panjabi MC f. Jay-Z "Beware Of The Boys." This is a remix of "Mundian To Bach Ke" and it's even better, ups the drama and intensity of the original. Probably my song of the decade (all of my contenders seem to be 2003):

Living Things "Bombs Below" (no YouTube embed). From my Voice review: "It's as good hit-your-fist-into-the-wall music as you'll ever get, but its condition of existence is that the wall stays intact."

Also flabbergasted that "Baby Boy" isn't doing better. I won't embed 'cause you've all had plenty of chances to hear it, but among other things, it's the strongest I've ever heard Sean Paul. He's like hard rubber, flexible enough to maneuver and to strike you, but hard enough never to give way.

Next heat looks EVIL

Not to dismiss this heat as a mere aperitif, but daaaayum...

Crazy In Love, Justin's "Cry Me A River", Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life", Christina & Lil' Kim "Can't Hold Us Down", Blu Cantrell & Sean Paul "Breathe". Mis-Teeq's "Can't Get It Back"....

..and that's just stuff I nominated! (And I didn't even mention Coldplay's "Clocks" which would probably have struggled here anyway but now has no chance in hell)

Stop (ticking) Richard X

Biggest waste of space of the decade. I won't keep on about this after this round, but srsly ppl.

Ah, starting around here it gets real, before that it could just as well have been 1991 as 2001 as far as I'm concerned. XD

THREE PEOPLE VOTED FOR JET?!!!!

Just making sure everyone knows: we non-bogan Aussies officially disown them. They give our country a terrible name...

Just curious: is t.A.T.u. the highest tick no. we've had since the 6 tick rule? (I'm personally saving my Tatu tick for Not Gonna Get Us, which unlike AtTSS really WAS one of my singles of the year, but seeing it steam unstoppably ahead like that is still glee-inducing.)
