Oh I didn't realise the new heat would be up so quickly! Haven't even had a chance to listen to the last lot of songs. I will probably still vote in that heat anyway, but hopefully my vote wasn't required! Maybe I shall tick what I know here and revise later...

Music still gets a tick despite Ali G. It's aged pretty well I think!

For once, I could happily have gone beyond ten - first sweep ticked nine I needed to vote for, then had to pick one of a handful of marginals.

Personal recommendation: Never Been To Memphis is the best ever attack on country music by a couple of schoolgirls from Brooklyn, in a style and accents a bit like C&W as two schoolgirls from Brooklyn might imagine it if they had never actually heard any.

You must vote for DMX's "Party Up." I'm distressed that a couple of you haven't. Rob Sheffield's and my reasons are here: Fight For Your Right To Party. Brief summary of them is: It sounds like square dancing. Or it sounds like Depeche Mode. Or it sounds like Depeche Mode square dancing. It is hilarious. It uses the word "fishes." It has an invitation to fight that's really an invitation to dance. Rob: "If I understand you correctly, it sounds like the murder invitation functions as code for what the audience understands as a dance invitation. Kind of the opposite of 'Dancing in the Streets' — to get on the radio now, the only way you can sing about dancing in the streets is if you pretend to sing about fighting in the streets."

Oh my GOD this one is hard!! 14 instinctive ticks...gonna have to relisten to a bunch to narrow it down. No room for marginals this time!

God, 'Moving Too Fast' is good though. And 'Out Of Your Mind'! Best solo Spice effort ever.

I think it's pretty clear this is the best heat so far. Bad luck to stuff like "Most Girls" which easily gets ticked by me in the first few heats.

At The Drive-In get a tick for the same reasons that Radiohead and Bombfunk MCs did in previous heats - complete and utter time machine back to 2000: I reviewed ATD-I for the Oxford Student, slagged it off, sent it in too late anyway, never bothered going to any other meetings and completely trashed any ideas I ever had of being a music journalist (of which I had entertained some whilst at school, possibly after watching Almost Famous...) because I couldn't hack reviewing something I hated that much.

Then I heard One Armed Scissor in an indie disco and thought "oh bollocks this is actually quite good. Shit shit shit."

I've got one tick left and it's between "Masterblaster 2000," "Nicole's Groove," and "Never Be The Same Again" (all of which I like more than "Music" or "Never Been To Memphis," which I expect to be popular choices; at least "Music" will be). Any ideas which I should vote for? Also have to listen to the Beck and "Nausea."

In the meantime, my absolute favorite is "Monkeys Out," which is "spindly, sinister dancehall" that samples "...Baby One More Time"!

That bit just after the batsh1t middle 8 where Britters goes: "Ooops I [BAM!] diddit again to yr HEART!" is one of MM's best (and probably most recogniseable?) moments ever IMHO.

Blimey it's a sign of the strength of this round that Zed Bias' perfectly serviceable "Neighbourhood" is on zero.

Almost had ten without trying, then went back and unticked At the Drive In (don't really like it anymore) and gave it to Jamelia, then unticked Jamelia and gave it to Alizee. I'm surprised at how much I dislike that Sugababes track, tbh.

When Sarah Manvel first heard "Music" it sounded to her like Madonna was singing "Music makes me brush my teeth in the river." Honestly, those words would have been better.

OK, I can't believe I'm on course to NOT TICK BRITNEY.

Usually one asks "what else should I tick" in these heats - here though I'm going to ask people to make the case for UNTICKING one of the following:

DJ Luck & MC Neat - always preferred this to 'A Little Bit Of Luck'
Toktok vs Soffy O - electroclash was so formative 4 me, and this holds up
Alizée - lol I remember this being vaguely scandalous at the time due to its Humbert Humbertisms - now it seems so quaintly innocent
Madonna - as Kat says this holds up surprisingly well
Phaze One - early Wiley y'all!
Ruff Endz - ahhh post-Donell Jones smooth R&B jams <3
So Solid Crew - OH NO THAT'S THE WORD OH NO THAT'S THE WORD

Definitely not getting unticked - Pink, Artful Dodger, True Steppers, Sugababes, DMX. Which means that TWO of the above list have to go ;_;

And I've just heard the Photek for the first time and that's really good too :/

Granted it's a tough heat, but I'm VERY surprised that Pink, Artful Dodger and Victoria Beckham seem to be getting screwed! Those three are prob my favourite three here...

...but it's languishing shockingly, which can only mean that people haven't heard it.

Dear Poptimists,

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not let one of the most important songs from this year -- DMX'S "PARTY UP" -- go unnoticed in its first heat. I hereby am starting a SAVE DMX campaign directed specifically at getting Daphne and Celeste voters to consider giving their vote to an underdog to at least guarantee a run-off vote for DMX.

I have already sacrificed my Daphne and Celeste vote for the cause and will re-allocate it as deemed necessary. I love D&C too, but "U.G.L.Y." will almost certainly make it through and is better than "Ooh! Stick You!" anyway.

Don't think it's altogether fair that Daphne & Celeste bear the brunt of this. Madonna voters: she already WON History of Jop with "Into The Groove"! Whereas, this is probably DMX's and Alizee's only chance.

Anyhow, currently:

TIED FOR FOURTH: DMX, Daphne & Celeste
TIED FOR SIXTH, ONE VOTE BACK: Madonna, Pink, Alizee

I like them all, even nominated two of them (Daphne & Celeste and Pink). I currently have ticks on the board for the DMX, the Alizee, and the Pink, which I like in that order. I'm willing to sacrifice Pink, who will have further opportunities with "There You Go" and "Get The Party Started." (But a five-way runoff for fourth and fifth would be entertaining as well.)

Well, I could re-sacrifice my vote for Alizee for the run-off (assuming someone doesn't bump one of the other ones back up in the interim, which is certainly possible). Except I don't think DMX would really have a chance against Madonna, Alizee, Mel C (where the eff did THAT come from?!), and Pink. And I'd rather see Alizee go through now than lose in a run-off to the Madgester or something.
