The History Of Pop Part 9 aka Wo oh oh my guy the DJ after midnight

A close poll for Now 8 saw Run DMC come out winners with a record 30 tiXoRs - Cameo in second, and the Pet Shops and Mel and Kim in third. Glancing over the wurstvotes it seems that poor Nick Berry carries off the sausage.

And now onto Now 9. Early 87: a problematic time for pop in some ways, with questions being asked in the House the press over the sudden ad-inspired influx of old pop in the charts. I genuinely have no idea what's going to win this. Notice though the first sniffs of HOUSE MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG coming to save us from Kamen et all. UB40 and Genesis provide an air of cosy familiarity in this brave new cyberworld, though.

Everything on this album is terrible! (I haven't heard the Bananarama or Steve 'Silk' Hurley songs which I might be OK, but everything I have heard is WOEFUL)

Jack yr body is ACE.

if Lex has not heard Taffy that is tragic. a YSI is on its way surely. also A-HA, come on, you must have heard this.

anyway, it's not that bad, but it does come after a very strong run of Nows. I think it compares quite well to recent Nows for egg.

Rockism confessional: I absolutely HATED "jack yr body" when it came out. i was not keen on this new sound. i was won round slowly.

i have never even heard of taffy before, and unfortunately a ysi will be of no use as i cannot download!

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was v keen, but then got terribly distracted by indie.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
it's very 'terrible overblown long-haired soft rock', isn't it?

(the now album, not taffy, whomsoever that may be)

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No! It is bouncy as hell transatlantic europop!

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
i have played it at poptimism - not that anyone was there :-(

[identity profile] triffidfarm.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I hated it at the time and may have said something about hte poverty of their so-called lyrics etc. How little I knew! Thank goodness for the passage of time.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i meant the surfeit of bon jovi, europe, berlin et al on this album!

i hope the name taffy is not a signifier of welshness...

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have absolutely NO recollection of that Nick Kamen record whatsoever. I do remember his pants, mind.

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
my worst stint of this was when my sister suddenly got heavily into the likes of Voodoo Ray etc, and i was being annoying brother "ha ha, this is shite". FULE.

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
what in antirockism's dread name is the "real actual" mix? YOUR SCARE QUOTES ARE UNDERPOWERED SIR

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
why am i cursed to remember the mental as anything, but can't recall either Pepsi&Shirley, Bananarama or Five Star. bah

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Idiot Alan. It wz Voodoo Ray that really triggered my OMG WTF this is AMAZING TEH FUTUR IS NOW reaction. Then I bought a Sonic Youth record and it all went wrong.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
this is a weird one for sure.

who the hell are the sodding Ward brothers?

why is Gary Moore on a NOW yet AGANE??!

'Jack Your Body' will always be good.

but come on, Livin On A Prayer! the second best 'hair metal pop' song of 1987 (before Europe, but after Def Leppard and the Mighty Mutt's 'Animal')

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I would really love to hear 'Heartache' again if anyone can YSI - in my mind it is good.

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
