League Of Pop Week 12 NOMINATIONS
For the last time, your nominations please for the League of Pop. Both players this week -
fugitivemotel and
blue_russian are safely in mid-table with nothing to play for - but they will be looking forward to casting what may well be the deciding votes in the two leagues.
fugitivemotel says: "my favourite pop song ever is "crazy for you" by let loose. the first vinyl i ever bought was "wee rule" by the wee papa girl rappers. the first cd single i ever bought was "damn i wish i was your lover" by sophie b hawkins. the first cd album i ever bought was "pocket full of kryptonite" by the spin doctors. my favourite five bands ever are nirvana, oasis, radiohead, nine inch nails, and elbow. i like stuff that's ridiculous and pushes the boundaries, like mindless self indulgence. my favourite rapper is mc paul barman. avril is better than christina or britney. i also have a weakness for indie guitars and emotional lyrics; stuff like dashboard or casiotone for the painfully alone. i hate metal, country, opera, and trance."
blue_russian says: "Welcome, Chart Championship teams, to Olympic Stadium in sunny Moscow. People around the internet call me Mitya, and I'll be your host this week. A few salient facts: I was born in the US but have lived most of my adult life in various places in Europe. Growing up, I was convinced that all "current" music was crap, until I heard "Down Under" by Men at Work. I can or have noodled about on a reasonably wide range of musical instruments, which in practice means I tend to hear/like songs with memorable riffs or instrumental hooks. To say that I don't listen to lyrics would be fair, at least in the context of describing my tastes in four or five sentences; I've also always thought it helps explain why I listen to so much music in different languages. I have a broadband connection at home, and I know how to use it.
A few things that are likely to hook me, musically:
- Power pop ("Twisterella," Ride; "In the Street," Big Star; "Back on the Chain Gang," Pretenders)
- Vocal harmonies and counterpoint lines ("I Can Hear Music," The Beach Boys; "4ever," The Veronicas)
- Epic, spacey, and droning songs ("Three Days" Jane's Addiction; "Medication," Spiritualized; "My Mother the War," 10,000 Maniacs; "Lightning Blue Eyes," Secret Machines)
- Ecstatic dance-pop ("I Believe in You," Kyile)
- Funk (from classic 70s to Brand New Heavies to Gnarls Barkley)
And, well, you know, the usual poptimist stuff. (I mean, really, we all like Mika, don't we?) Obviously I listen to a wide range of other stuff (refer to my submissions to other players), but I suggest you go for "thrill power" - something that's going to get me out of my comfy chair. Cheers!"
[Poll #984396]
Nominated tracks to leagueofpop@gmail.com by Friday please, and I can sniff most things out on the interwebs. MP3 format if at all possible!
Next Monday I'll put the schedule up for the play-offs, and explain how they're going to work.
