The History Of Jop Part 13 aka It's fun to lose and to pretend

Back after a short absence it's the Pazz and Jop poll for 1991 - a particular blockbuster of a poll this with TEN ticks to be shared between 28 singles (would have been 29 but for C&C Music Factory cropping up last year too).

There's a fair bit of ground to cover in the comments boxes, I'm thinking!

I missed Nirvana almost completely - between school and university, was delving back into older music and hardly paying attention to current indie - first time I heard it was in a pub a couple days before Christmas. Wasn't that impressed really. By the time I went to university they were still huge, of course, but they have never clicked with me. I did buy a check lumberjack shirt around this time though.

I missed them at the time because the thing is they were NEVER huge, chartwise - I mean huge in a way that a top 10-following 9-yr-old would be aware of them. It took me until well into the mid-90s to work out that that awful song I kept hearing (usually at middle school discos: tended to clear the floor of all but the smelly wannabe-sk8er boys) was 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

yeah it's not like they had a #1 single. i actually HATED 'smells like teen spirit' at first but this was largely because of the terrible rendition of it on Top Of The Pops. they fared far better on Jonathan Ross with 'Territorial Pissings', somehow, but it was oddly not until 'Come As You Are's release that i began to like them.

I have never ever ever wavered in my loathing of them, they really do just make a HORRIBLE NOISE which when you scratch the surface reveals only TEENAGE BOY MOANING ie BORING GO AWAY PLEASE.

I am surprised you haven't mentioned the Tori Amos cover Lex, which is one of the v. few things by her I own.

I was going to but feared that people might have become slightly Amos-covered out. But it is gorgeous, and obviously far far far superior to the ham-fistedly self-centred original.

Haha she's covered both the top 2 singles of this year and improved them both! Go Tori.

maybe but 13 year old me was unimpressed and unaware of the joke. wasn't it all because Kurt was told he HAD to sing live hence taking the piss?

what happened was kurt's throat was fvcked (possibly due to touring/possibly due to large amount of druqs), and as it had been DECREED that all artists MUST sing live at this point in TOTP history (beginning of the end, in my opinion), despite kurt's begging they wouldn't let him mime, hence the performance we got.

anyone who sa anything else is WRONG ;)

i dunno why and I don't care why he did it but when he did it ws a good, funny performance.
