The History Of Pop Part 59 aka Only turning into tigers when we gotta fight back

Now 59 - later 2004 - the Golden Age continues, or....? JoJo, Three Of A Kind, V, Khia, Eric Prydz - we may well not see their like again. On paper this looks set to have a clear winner - but who knows the secret paths down which anygoodatall science will lead us?

Now 58 ended in a DRAW! - and no, no untickings were involved. "Hey Ya" and "Some Girls" fight it out down at the bottom of this poll. Kelis was one vote behind, and Girls Aloud one vote behind that. Very close.

The rest of this is mediocre at best though. GA should walk it.

I think I love it mostly because it sounds completely unlike anything else they ever did.

The first single is really good though! It was called 'Single', it was kind of cod-dancehall, it was all about how great it was to be single and it really suited her bellowing voice. I thought she was going to be a brilliant popstar after that - this, as OK as it is, really heralded the start of her immediate descent into MOR dullness and a career as the New Imbroolyooly.

probably my favourite GA single actually (it alternates with 'The Show')

have we had a Robbie canon yet?

I have no idea what any of the lyrics are because they MUMBLE them all!

Is the Andre 3000 connection why you don't like this? I rather like this and think it's still much better than 90% of the stuff on this now, although why this was a much bigger hit than the far superior In Public I have no idea.

Oh yes that Bounty Killer one was ace!

"Pump It Up" by Danzel

Has the makings of a good dumb euro-bdoosh-bdoosh record... and then the beat kicks in. Ick.

i refuse to give 00s Deep Dish any credit - they are a shadow of their former 90s selves.

Oakie totally copied this for 'Faster Kill Pussycat' tho eh?

No coincidence that Mutya is by far the best popstar on that list!

Yeah, same here, though I always end up going for 'No Good Advice' because it was their statement of intent and all that.

Well observed, the Lex.

No, I do like it, I just think it's only OK where Kelis is usually mind-blowingly brilliant.

'In Public' wasn't a big hit because she released it approx a year after 'Millionaire' and didn't bother to promote it anywhere, it was kind of just...there to fill time and space.

I woke up early this mow-nin

I DON'T THINK Y'ALL HEARD ME!

It's no Girls Aloud, granted, but it's still brilliant.

Her and Danny are just so Utterly Comedic when they are put in the same room as each other I cannot do anything but tick one of her songs.

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone who didn't tick V should be banned. It's Xenomania with the most homoerotic boy band ever (even if the gay one turned out to be the one I least fancied) WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE.

Oh you're all as indie as Lex.

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They were a Xenomania band, too? I thought Brian Higgins had the Golden Touch?

No, we haven't!

This is U&K, as I never used to say.
