Poptimists Advent Calendar Day 1

Eddy Arnold - "I'm Your Private Santa Claus"

Ho ho ho, Poptimists, the first of 24 festive YSI treats for you (and of course if you can't download, you have only to ask for a gmail). First up is Eddy Arnold, a gentleman with a twinkle in his eye whose innocent Santa song has a somewhat filthy dimension - or perhaps that's just my degraded mind reading too much into lines like

"I'm your private Old Saint Nick
A pillow in the right place does the trick."

The History Of Pop Part 6 aka Just look towards the west and find a friend

It's Thursday, it's 2'o'clock, it's time for the Now poll. The series reaches surely its lowest ebb with Now 6, and evidence of penny-pinching abounds with minor hits and follow-ups all over the shop. Luckily those old faithfuls UB40 and Phil are around to 'steady the ship'. Did they ever team up? It seems inconceivable that they didn't and yet I can't remember - or my brain won't let me.

It has to be admitted that the 'bookies' have a clear favourite this time, but then the bookies certainly wouldn't have tipped Katrina and The Waves to beat out the competition on Now 5. Jimmy Nail seems to have attracted most of the DAILY HATE.

Comments, complaints, love letters to Baltimora, and musings on the impossibility of love across the iron curtain in the comments box, please.

Dishing up love for a hungry world )

Now 6 Requests, part one

Maria Vidal - Body Rock
As requested by [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger
Communards - You Are My World
As requested implicitly by [livejournal.com profile] zenith - when claiming not to know anything off disc 2 (and if this is TRUE, "Tarzan Boy" will follow with the next batch of requests)

Monkey Business on a Sunny Afternoon (Now 6 requests, 2)

Another implicit request: Baltimora - "Tarzan Boy"
He wasn't Irish, the singer. As you may have guessed from the accent. Jimmy McShane did do all the dancing around and miming in the video, though.
He's dead now. And December 1st is a fitting day to remember him. (Info source)

And! the one and only CORRECT version of Mai Tai's "History" (I knew it wasn't a mere 2:42 long and that fadeout sounded wIerd)

Request for the Gary Moore denied, on account of being really, really, really, awfully RUB. Worse than Phil, actually.
EDIT: You asked, for it, mr [livejournal.com profile] dubdobdee. Gary Moore - Empty Rooms. Download and listen at your peril, you'll get no sleep tonight.

the mathematics of spectacular consumption

now 1 = 1983
2005 = now 60
=> 60 nows = 22 years
=> 44 years = 120 nows

so the first now i bought must have been NOW (- 61)!!
